TWO new sections of the A453 will be opened next month as traffic is switched to the new road.

The £150 million redevelopment project began in January 2013 and will dual a seven-mile section of the A453 between M1 junction 24 in Leicestershire and the A52 in Notts.

Traffic will be switched to the newly constructed westbound carriageway between West Leake and Mill Hill roundabout on December 2.

The 4km stretch will be the longest section of the new road in use.

A second switch will put traffic on a one-kilometre section of the westbound carriageway between the canal bridge and railway bridge near the Parkway junction on December 10.

The Highways Agency has previously said it expects to finish work ahead of its summer 2015 target.

Assistant project manager Robin Jackson said: "Once the switches are completed about 80 per cent of the newly constructed carriageway in the rural section will be open to traffic. That's a significant milestone and we are delighted with the progress being made."

Work, dependant on the weather, will take place overnight with temporary traffic lights controlling traffic.

Work should be complete by 5.30am but passengers heading to East Midlands Airport are advised to allow extra time for their journeys.
