Safety concerns over Wollaton Park's tube slide has put it out of action.

The new £255,000 playpark, which was built at the end of June, consists of a new zip wire, climbing frame, roundabout, swings, a see-saw and a slide.

But after ten families contacted Nottingham City Council with concerns over the "angle and speed of the [slide's] descent" it has been taped off.

One parent claimed that their daughter had cut her head on the way down the slide, and others complained their child suffered "minor bumps and scrapes".

Equipment manufacturer Eibe is now looking to see whether any improvements can be made to the five-metre slide, which is expected to be re-opened by the end of next month.

Rob Kirkwood, chairman of Friends of Wollaton Park, said it was good to see action being taken. He said: "The Friends of Wollaton Park were aware of the design of the play area but we were not involved in the specifics of each individual piece of equipment. Irrespective of that, clearly if there are concerns about safety then they need to be fully addressed. We welcome the fact they are being addressed and we are looking forward to it being re-opened."

A spokesman for Nottingham City Council said: "The [new playpark] project was backed by local residents, councillors and the Friends of Wollaton Park, while the chosen design was voted for by 1,400 people.

"The slide, in particular, has proved very popular with children and families but some concerns had been raised at the angle and speed of the descent.

"The equipment went through stringent safety checks prior to being opened and passed all of them, but because of these concerns the council has gone back to the equipment manufacturers to see if any improvements can be made.

"As a result of these discussions, the manufacturer has decided to temporarily put the slide out of action and close off the entrance to it from the climbing frame.

"It is unclear at the moment how long it will be before the slide returns but it is expected to be re-opened by the end of next month. In the meantime, the remainder of the play area is open for families to enjoy."

Extra rubber matting has been added to the mound on which the slide sits while it is out of action.

When the Post contacted Eibe they were unavailable to comment.
