A SEVERE weather warning has been issued for this afternoon with a forecast for heavy rain.

The Met Office has said that towns across the county could be at risk of showers and localised flooding from 3pm to 11.45pm.

It has already forecast rain for this evening from 6pm until midnight.

According to the chief forecaster's assessment, air across northern and eastern England will become increasingly unstable throughout the day, with thundery showers likely to develop.

This could bring with it 20mm of rain falling in the space of one hour, but many places could miss the worst of the bad weather.

The weather warning has also been extended to the rest of the East Midlands, East of England, North East England and Yorkshire & Humber.

On Monday this week, schools were closed and roads were blocked across the county including in Kimberley and Eastwood following flash floods.

In Cossall, the water was measured as 18 inches deep.

Despite the bleak outlook, the Met Office has also predicted that Nottingham will experience temperatures of up to 22C from 4pm until 5pm, only three degrees lower than highs in Rio de Janerio.

The weekend forecast is for overcast skies throughout, with brief sunny spells from 5pm-10pm on Saturday and 6pm-10pm on Sunday with temperatures reaching 19C.
