THE search for a company to manage a new visitor centre at a country park is due to start. Nottinghamshire County Council believes that working with an external partner at Sherwood Forest is the best way to manage the site for the future. The council is also proposing to increase the £1.8million already allocated to the new centre up to a total of £4.3m to underline its commitment to the project. The formal tendering process is due to start in the coming weeks with the aim to secure a partner organisation by the end of summer 2015, with a view to the new visitor centre being open to the public in summer 2017. Councillor John Knight, committee chairman for culture, at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: "The county council wants to protect, preserve and enhance the ecology and heritage of Sherwood Forest, further promote its national and international reputation and have a modern visitor offer that reflects the status of the forest and Robin Hood."

Nottinghamshire Police carry out cannabis raids in week of action

POLICE raids are being carried out across the county to catch criminals growing cannabis in their homes – and cut down the resulting violence in communities.

The force has been granted 11 warrants to search properties for the illegal plants in a 'week of action' to take on the drug growers, both in the city and in the north of Nottinghamshire.

The raids round off a month-long campaign to raise awareness of cannabis being grown in spare rooms and lofts, as well as warning residents how they could become victims of mistaken identity.

Figures from Nottinghamshire Police said 95 per cent of the cannabis grows they have found in the past two years have been in residential properties.

Detective Inspector Mike Allen, who has been leading the campaign, said: "There is still clearly a national debate on the legalisation of cannabis and certain generations don't see the problem with it.

"But the risks it poses to the rest of the community are considerable; there is an increased risk of fire, criminal and antisocial behaviour, and the chance of your home being targeted by burglars looking for a grow."

This was backed up by more numbers from the police that showed the number of innocent victims burgled because of cannabis increased from one back in 2012 to 14 so far this year.

The first week of the campaign focused on appealing to the public for tip-offs to people growing cannabis in their neighbourhoods.

The force believes it has seen a shift from large-scale cannabis cultivation in industrial buildings to smaller crops grown under the radar at home, so wants the public to help sniff out the offenders.

It received 22 calls with new information over the past three weeks, which was then passed on to officers to comb through the intelligence, before making their plan of attack to catch out the criminals on early morning raids.

DI Allen revealed how the police had managed to be one step ahead of the game with one of its first raids.

He said: "On Friday, we found 10 plants in a raid at a house that just two days later was subject to an aggravated burglary – with four people breaking in with weaponry.

"Ten plants may not sound many, but it shows the level of criminality linked to the drug if the house was being targeted so heavy-handedly."

Other raids have been less successful, with The Post going along to two where only a small amount of bagged cannabis was found and identified as for personal use.

But DI Allen admitted the action could be "hit and miss" and you never knew what you were going to find.

He added: "Wherever we have cannabis being grown and people having homes broken into who are not involved, it is up to us to reduce that risk.

"I hope this campaign has sent a strong message to growers and we are encouraged by the number of members of the community getting involved in tackling the crime."

Nottinghamshire's brewers to take on the world

THE county's best breweries have joined together to promote Nottinghamshire's A-list ales across the country.

Twelve of the most successful producers in the area have formed the Brewers of Nottinghamshire collective, which will market the area's beers and look to bring beer tourists in.

The move comes after the success of the Robin Hood Beer festival last week when up to 30,000 visitors flocked to the city, pumping around £1.5 million into the local economy.

The project, which has been initiated by tourism organisation Experience Nottinghamshire, has led to a new guide to the city's pubs and bars being produced. And a new pub trail through the city is being developed before the organisation takes the area's ales around the country to be showcased to beer lovers.

Amanda Ward, managing director of Giltbrook-based Blue Monkey brewery, is one of the 12 to sign up.

She said: "We're all involved and we're trying to expand the brewery scene and move it not only within Nottingham, but out of the area. I really do feel what we have is good enough. I am seeing the Robin Hood beer festival as the second best in the country – it's been compared with Oktoberfest in Munich.

"Nottinghamshire has a huge following for real ale. I believe it could become a destination, especially with all the train station links and the trams. It's making it more accessible. People will travel once they get wind of the beautiful breweries we have here and the beers we supply."

Dom Flynn, of Navigation Brewery, added: "There is currently a huge shift towards people choosing real ale and craft beer, and it makes sense for us to work together and promote Nottinghamshire as a beer destination to a wider audience."

The group was officially launched at Nottingham's beer festival over the weekend.

Experience Nottinghamshire will now create a marketing activity calendar which will target events across the country to showcase the local produce and the city as a destination for drinkers. The tourism organisation's head of business development, Keith Laird, said: "Food and drink tourism is growing in popularity, and Nottinghamshire benefits from a very rich beer and brewing offer, making it the ideal destination for beer-lovers from around the UK and the world."

City councillor Alex Ball is a supporter of the project and said it was a great opportunity to raise the profile of Nottingham. "We're privileged to have such an excellent array of beer brewers in Nottinghamshire and I'm thrilled this project is going ahead. It's the perfect vehicle to help fly the flag of Nottingham as a must-visit beer destination."

Lawrence of Arabia book owned by Nottinghamshire friend set to fetch £60,000 at auction

A RARE book signed by Lawrence of Arabia and his Nottinghamshire friend Viscount Allenby could fetch £60,000 at an auction. The copy of Seven Pillars of Wisdom is one of only 170 bound copies from the subscriber's edition of the book, published in 1926. Each of these copies were signed by Lawrence and each subscriber paid thirty guineas – or just £31.50 – for a copy. Viscount Allenby, who was born near Southwell, also signed his copy. Now the Allenby copy is expected to sell for between £50,000 and £70,000 at Sotheby's in London on November 4 – but its desirability could see it fetch even more. Auctioneers describe the book as "a major association copy of Lawrence's epic masterpiece from the library of General Sir Edmund Allenby." Seven Pillars of Wisdom is an autobiographical account of the experiences of T. E. Lawrence, better known as Lawrence of Arabia, while serving as a liaison officer with rebel forces during the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Turks between 1916 and 1918. Allenby commanded Lawrence in the revolt, and was pleased with the way Lawrence portrayed him in the book. On January 22, 1927, he wrote to Lawrence saying: "I congratulate you on a great work; fit record of your splendid achievements in the war. "I am grateful for the kind way in which you refer to my part in our collaboration and am happy to think that to our unity of thought can be attributed, in great measure, the success obtained." Edmund Allenby was one of Britain's outstanding First World War military commanders. He was born on April 23, 1861 on the estate of his mother's family at Brackenhurst Hall, near Southwell. In 1919, the year after the end of the First World War, he was rewarded for his military feats when he was made a Viscount. Lawrence of Arabia's friendship with Viscount Allenby was not Lawrence's only link with the county. At different times Lawrence owned seven Nottingham-made Brough Superior motorcycles. He was riding a Brough Superior SS100 when he was injured in an accident near his Dorset home in May 1935. He died six days later on May 19, 1935, aged 46. In the 1962 Oscar-winning film Lawrence of Arabia, Peter O'Toole starred in the title role, while Viscount Allenby – after whom Allenby Road in Southwell, is named – was portrayed by the late Jack Hawkins.

POLICE are hunting a man who attempted to rob a Post Office in Beechdale while armed with what was thought to be a firearm. The man entered the Post Office in Ambergate Road just before noon on Monday, October 13 and used the suspected weapon to make threats to staff and customers. No shots were fired and nothing was stolen. He then ran off, fleeing on a bright orange moped which was later found abandoned in Wollaton. The offender is believed to have entered the building wearing a black bike helmet and dark clothing. He is thought to be white, of slim build and about 6ft tall. Detectives are investigating any link between this incident and a robbery at Trowell Road Post Office on Monday, October 6. DI Mike Allen said: "Both incidents happened during daylight hours in busy areas on consecutive Mondays. If you were in the area around these times think back to whether you remember a man matching the description above. "Did you see someone arrive or leave by bright orange moped? Do you know about the robberies or do you know anyone who has been driving a bike like this? We will increasing patrols in the area and working with Post Office staff. Any information may assist our investigation and will be treated in confidence." A 23-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident. He remains in police custody pending further investigation work.

French restaurant chain Côte Brasserie sets sights on West Bridgford

French restaurant chain Cote Brasserie is on the cusp of opening its first restaurant in Nottinghamshire, creating up to 50 jobs. The company, which has 53 branches across the UK, is awaiting permission to develop in Central Avenue, West Bridgford at the former David Holmes shoe shop. The site has been empty for more than a year. It would add to the town's growing restaurant scene which over the past year has seen other up-market dining chains like Carluccio's open in the same street. The developer's designs suggest there would be enough space to accommodate more than 114 covers with additional space for a further 30 outside the restaurant on Central Avenue. The plans were submitted by Pegasus Planning Company on behalf of Halgram Ltd, the current owner of the property, and Cote Brasserie. According to the planning application, 15 full time staff and 35 part time staff vacancies would be made available. A spokeswoman for Côte Brasserie said: "We are very excited to be opening in West Bridgford and were keen to wait to ensure we were able to secure the perfect site for us. It is a vibrant community with a premium feel, but still very accessible, which is exactly what Côte Brasserie is all about. "We have invested over £950k in the refurbishment of the site and are pleased to be able to bring jobs to the local area. We will be recruiting front and back of house staff to join the Côte family." Residents and West Bridgford and shoppers showed a mixed reaction towards the plans. Nurse Julie Nicholson, 54, of Park Avenue, West Bridgford, said: "It would nice to have a different kind of business, everyone seems to be jumping on the bandwagon - I do like that atmosphere around here but do we really need another restaurant? "We could really do with something like a clothes shop - we have only got only Peacocks at the moment. "A restaurant would be nice, I can't grumble, but we desperately need more shops - something with reasonable value." Teaching assistant Georgina Carnegie-Brown, 45, of Stanley Road, West Bridgford, added: "I know West Bridgford is up and coming and people are coming for the variety here but I am not sure if this would be anything special. "We do have a lot of cafes - I'm not sure whether that French element will make that make much of a difference." A decision due date for the application has not been set by Rushcliffe Borough Council.

A DRIVER has been rushed to hospital with suspected serious injuries after a crash in Gunthorpe. Emergency services were called to the scene on Lowdham Road at about 1.45pm on Tuesday. The collision involved a car and an articulated lorry. Firefighters from Carlton, Arnold and Highfields fire stations attended the scene and had to cut the driver of the car free from his vehicle. He was taken to Queen's Medical Centre by East Midlands Ambulance Service. A second male casualty had been released before the arrival of the fire service and was checked over by paramedics. Police closed the road from the roundabout at Lowdham while the scene was cleared, causing traffic to build up in the area. Joe Bass, a barman at the Unicorn Hotel in Gunthorpe, said he had seen an ambulance at the scene of the incident. He said: "The road was blocked off up until the bridge and the traffic was being diverted through East Bridgford – I'm sure people there were finding it was a lot busier than usual. It's always horrible when you hear someone's been hurt."

Notts County sign QPR winger Michael Petrasso on loan

NOTTS County have signed highly-rated QPR winger Michael Petrasso. The Magpies have wrapped up a three month emergency loan deal for the Canadian and his arrival ends a long pursuit of the winger by boss Shaun Derry, who has tracked the player for most of the season. Derry, who had been keen to bring in the player last season, was understood to have lined up a deal for the 19-year-old last month only for QPR to send him on loan to Leyton Orient, where he played four games. But the Magpies boss has persisted with his chase, with QPR manager Harry Redknapp happy for the player to continue to develop in League One. Derry wants Petrasso to add more creativity to his attack, having built a rock-solid defence which is currently the tightest in League One. And he could give Petrasso his debut against Crawley at Meadow Lane this weekend when they look to take their unbeaten run to nine games. The winger is certainly no stranger to the toils of League One with his stint at the Os not the only time he has played at that level. Last season he enjoyed stints at Oldham and Coventry and made a considerable impression on both clubs with his dynamic wing play. He scored one goal for Oldham in an away victory at Gillingham last November and his performances at Boundary Park earned him a switch to Coventry in February. He played eight times for the Sky Blues and also managed to get on the score sheet in a 3-1 defeat at Tranmere. QPR monitored him closely while he was on loan and were sufficiently impressed enough to reward Petrasson with a new three-year deal last April.

Playhouse theatre given £230,000 loan

$

NOTTINGHAM City Council has given the Playhouse a £230,000 loan – and will only charge £469 interest. The theatre has asked for the loan to cover a "cashflow shortfall" relating to the works that are currently taking place. The authority, which is the landlord of the building in Wellington Circus, said it was happy to lend the £236,844 sum for 69 days after the Playhouse explored other avenues for funding. Solar panels and new door lobbies are being installed at the Playhouse following an Arts Council grant worth nearly £1 million. But the Playhouse has asked for the funding to cover the works while the Arts Council money comes forward and the city council has signed off plans to give the Playhouse the cash last week. "We're not skint," said chief executive of the Playhouse Stephanie Sirr. "But we needed the money and the city council said they would be happy to help us out with a short term loan. "It also makes it cheaper for us not having to borrow commercially, but we expect to have to do that by February (as part of the scheme). "Also, any money that we save from borrowing money from the city council rather than commercially can go towards our other work we do here." The work taking place as part of making the Grade II listed building more energy efficient is expected to save around £35,000 a year. Theatre critic Alan Geary believes that the Playhouse should be congratulated on this year's performances. The 69-year-old of Carrington said: "It has been a really good year for them and I keep a tally of the best shows I have seen. "In my top 10 there are four from the Playhouse which is one more than the Theatre Royal. "Some of the best shows so far have been Propaganda Swing, The Kite Runner and My Judy Garland Life. "On the face of it this deal seems very good for the theatre." The council said that it would not act like a bank to businesses within the city and would only consider a similar deal with others who have strong links with the authority and in a position to repay the money. Councillor Graham Chapman, Deputy Leader of Nottingham City Council, said: "We agreed to help out because we felt that it would be of benefit to the city. We own the building that the Playhouse operates from and this is a project which will improve the infrastructure of that site. "The rate is based on our assessment of risk involved in the loan. We are covering our costs and helping the theatre to reduce its loan charges for a short period, and we are able to because we can borrow more cheaply than they can. "This is a further example of where the City Council has been able to support organisations deliver schemes that will benefit Nottingham." The £236,844 will be taken from the council's cash flow and will not affect services, this is on top of the £170,000 a year already given to the theatre. Leader of the Conservatives at the city council, councillor Georgina Culley, said: "In principle this is a sensible approach, the Playhouse building belongs to the city council and the loan, while yielding only a very small return, will see maintenance and improvements to the premises."

Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre project given extra £2.5 million

PLANS for a new multi-million-pound visitor centre at Sherwood Forest are set to be given a cash boost. Nottinghamshire County Council is proposing to add £2.5 million to the already allocated £1.8 million for the project. The council is also due to restart the bidding process to find a partner to develop and operate the site which is tipped to receive thousands of visitors a year. Jennifer Spencer, chief executive of Experience Nottinghamshire, said: "We welcome the news that progress is being made on plans for a new visitor centre at Sherwood Forest. "Robin Hood and Sherwood Forest are great drivers for visitors coming to Nottinghamshire, particularly from overseas, and we're confident a new attraction at this historic site will provide a significant boost to the visitor economy." The formal tendering process is due to start in the coming weeks with the aim to secure a partner organisation by the end of summer 2015, with a view to the new visitor centre being open to the public in summer 2017. Councillor John Knight, committee chairman for culture, at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: "The county council wants to protect, preserve and enhance the heritage of Sherwood Forest as well as further promote its national and international reputation and have a modern visitor offer that reflects the status of the forest and Robin Hood. "Over the summer period, we have already had strong interest from numerous organisations about working with the county council to achieve our vision." The current visitor centre was built in the 1970s and the new project has taken more than 10 years to get off the ground after funding and business partners fell through over the years. Sherwood MP Mark Spencer said: "This project has been going on forever and we have missed so many boats it is about time things moved forward. "I think that the £2.5 million would be better spent improving infrastructure and we should be letting the private companies pay for it. "I welcome the fact that they have started the bidding process again but we need to get this sort this time." The county council's Culture Committee will consider proposals to launch the formal tendering process, at its meeting on October 21 and the extra funding will be discussed at a further meeting in the coming months.

Broxtowe named one of the cheapest places to live in the East Midlands

FIRST-TIME buyers could grab themselves a bargain if they move to Broxtowe, after the borough was named one of the most affordable places to live in the East Midlands. Residents say the area has a number of "up-and-coming" towns – and have denied the idea that cheap could mean undesirable. Broxtowe came second in a list of the most affordable places to buy a home in the East Midlands, compiled by the National Housing Federation. It was beaten only by Bolsover in Derbyshire. Chris Whiteman, who lives on Broadgate Avenue in Beeston, said he believed the area would be the ideal place for people looking for a cheap property. The 70-year-old added: "Obviously there are areas in Broxtowe that are more affordable than others – Stapleford is cheaper than Beeston for example. "But as a whole I think it's a pretty cheap area. "I certainly think there will be some bargains to be had along the tram routes. "But I definitely don't think being cheap means it isn't a nice place to live – we've got good shops, good transport links and in Beeston we're only five miles from the motorway and four miles from the city centre." Dave Clifford, who lives on The Square in Beeston, agreed. The 66-year-old said: "I would certainly disagree with any suggestion that affordable housing means it's not a nice area. "There's a lot going on in the towns in Broxtowe. In Beeston we've got good pubs, restaurants and plenty of entertainment." According to the National Housing Federation, the average house price in Broxtowe is £152,363. The average salary is £27,274. Paul Sweeney, director at Robert Ellis estate agents in Beeston, said the area was attracting a large number of first-time buyers. He said: "I'm in Beeston, and up the road there's an area where we've got properties for sale in excess of £1million. "But then just yards down the road you can pick up a terraced house for less than £100,000. "That means it's a great cosmopolitan area to move into. "There are also houses for sale at around £90,000 in areas like Stapleford, making it a great area for first-time buyers. "In Broxtowe, they can afford to buy a three-bedroom terraced house and then stay in that property longer and raise a family there." But while some people may associate affordable with an undesirable area, Mr Sweeney believes Broxtowe has a lot going for it. He said: "I see it as an up-and-coming place and one that has a lot of reasons to buy here. There's something for everybody."
