PLANS to close a care home in Long Eaton will be decided upon next week.

Southlands Care Home in Main Street, Long Eaton, has been recommended for closure following a 12-week consultation earlier this year.

Residents, relatives, staff and the general public were approached to have their views heard.

If the decision is made to close the home, its permanent residents would be given the choice to move to Lacemaker Court in Tamworth Road, Long Eaton, which is currently in development.

The new building provides a mix of care apartments for over 55s with specialist rooms for people who need higher levels of care.

Should the home close, residents would be given an assessment by a social worker to determine their needs before they move.

Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Long Eaton councillor Clare Neill said: "We have looked at all the options and believe that this is the right way forward.

"We know this is an anxious time for residents and their families but if the decision was made to close Southlands we would work closely with them to find them the right place to live.

"I was heartened to hear that the residents want the staff to move with them and we will do our best to make sure this happens if the home closes."

Southlands, which is run by Derbyshire County Council provides accommodation for people with dementia, learning disabilities and mental heath conditions among other care needs.

The latest Care Quality Commission report of Southlands found that improvements were required in the care and welfare of people who use its services and staffing.

Concerns included the amount of staff available to support people and that "care and treatment was not always planned and delivered in a way that ensures people's safety and welfare."

Feedback from the 12-week consultation on the care home also found that staff, some residents, family carers and friends expressed concerns that the building was not purpose-built.

The proposed new home, Lacemaker Court, is a £10m development featuring therapy rooms, a public cafe and hair salon, with an expected opening of summer 2015.

The decision will be made at a meeting of Derbyshire County Cabinet on Tuesday, November 4.
