SHERWOOD Forest is marking its 60th anniversary as a protected site of scientific interest with £8,750 of celebratory events.

The money from the Big Lottery fun will go towards organising Sparkling Sherwood – a series of activities including talks and workshops about the cultural history of Sherwood, traditional woodland crafts and archaeology.

Sherwood Forest Nature Reserve comprises the ancient forests of Birklands and Budby South.

Birklands Forest is thought to be more 1,000 years old and was named due to the abundance of birch trees to which it is home. Budby South Forest, on the other hand, is an open, uncultivated heathland which was once grazed by wild deer, rabbits and livestock.

Sparkling Sherwood, organised by the Sherwood Forest Trust, also includes an illumination of the forest's ancient oaks and evening walks to rarely seen corners of the site.

Patrick Candler, chief executive of the Sherwood Forest Trust said: ""Our Awards for All funding has enabled us to buy ecological LED lighting that can be used without a generator to illuminate the ancient trees."
