TWO cars that patrol the city and attend reports of antisocial behaviour were called out nearly 250 times in their first month.

The Night Cars were introduced by council and police partnership Community Protection after increased numbers of people complaining about noise and other nuisance behaviour.

They are in use from Friday night until Monday morning with the intention of providing a quick response to trouble.

Temporary Chief Inspector Mark Stanley said: "The night cars have proved to be a valuable asset to the way we tackle and respond to antisocial behaviour.

"This dedicated resource not only provides a speedy and appropriate response to complaints reported late into the evening, but also offers valuable reassurance to residents whose lives are being blighted by antisocial behaviour.

"By deploying night cars to complaints made overnight and during the early hours, the teams will also help prevent incidents from escalating and reduce the number of repeat complaints."

In the first weekend of operation (Friday 4 to Monday 7 July) the night cars attended 57 complaints of noise and antisocial behaviour. The teams responded to 62 complaints in the second weekend, 68 in the third and 61 incidents in the last weekend of July.
