East Midlands Airport expects busiest weekend of the year

EAST Midlands Airport is expecting its busiest weekend of the year as people jet off for a Bank Holiday break.
The airport will see over 83,000 passengers pass through over the August public holiday - an eight per cent rise compared to 2013.
Howard Ebison, head of customer services at East Midlands Airport, said: "It will be a busy Bank Holiday weekend at East Midlands.
"[The rise is] a good sign of passenger confidence in the routes and services on offer here and we know that many passengers will be flying away to sunnier climates over the four day weekend."
But the swathes of travellers are using the hub at a time when the airport admits there are issues with queuing coming back into the UK.
Last weekend, passengers complained of having to wait in the rain for an hour whilst passports were checked to get back into the terminal.
The Home Office said the queues were caused by the arrival of 14 flights in quick succession, but the airport admitted it needed to make improvements.
A spokesman from the airport said: "We do not want any queues but immigration is a necessary part of travelling and a procedure that everyone has to go through. In this instance, lots of flights arrived at the same time."
Chris James, 28 of West Bridgford, is already concerned about his flight to Dublin this weekend after a poor experience when he flew to Croatia.
He said: "It was bad enough when I went to Croatia. It took an hour to get through security and I just about made it to the gate on time.
"I'm pretty sure some folks in the line with me missed their departure because of it."
Worries are also increasing over another possible eruption of a volcano in Iceland. Passengers do not want a repeat of the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull in 2010, which caused huge delays and grounding of flights for weeks.
Residents are being evacuated from the area surrounding the Baroarbunga volcano and the country is on high alert.
A spokesman from the airport said: "At the moment, we're monitoring the activity but we don't expect to see the same disruption as occurred in 2010.
"The Met Office are providing updates at present."
And airlines are trying to reassure passengers about their travel plans.
A spokesperson for Thomas Cook Airlines, which flies out of East Midlands Airport, said: "Flights for Thomas Cook Airlines are currently not affected, and we would like to assure all of our customers that we are monitoring the situation closely."
In preparation for this weekend though, Mr Ebison added: "We ask that people ensure they give themselves enough time to arrive at the airport to complete the check-in and security process and our staff will be working hard to ensure we keep the operation moving."
