GYM supervisor Stacey Smithson has taken on the Grand Union Challenge on a stand-up paddleboard to raise over £1,000 for Macmillan Cancer Care.

The Grand Union Challenge involved travelling 100km on the Grand Union Canal and navigating 65 locks in the space of 24 hours. The challenge was primarily aimed at walkers and runners, but when Stacey heard about it, she saw it as the perfect opportunity to test herself.

"I have completed various challenges before, but this was by far the toughest." she said. "Having lost my mother-in-law to stomach cancer only a few weeks before the challenge, it became even more important for me to complete it and raise money for Macmillan.

"I had to do a range of training in the lead up to the event to make sure I was prepared, luckily working at Holme Pierrepont means I had all of the facilities I needed right on my doorstep, from the fitness classes I teach, to strength training in their gym, as well as lots of paddling on the lake."

Holme Pierrepont Country Park resort manager Andrew Keen said: "Both our gym team and customers are extremely proud of Stacey and what she has achieved. She sets a great example."
